CHL Scoring leaders – Week 3
By the OilKnight 10/06/19
Welcome to our weekly update on CHL prospects. Here are the leading scorers among all 3 leagues for the 2020 draft eligibles & 16 yr old CHL rookies.

For the 3rd straight week, Quinton Byfield continues to lead all OHL draft eligibles in goals & points. No surprise there though he was finally held off the scoresheet on Saturday vs. The Soo (a 4-3 Sudbury win).
One of the biggest surprises this season so far is not the fact Cole Perfetti is tied for 2nd in the OHL with 34 SOG‘s – it’s he’s only scored on ONE of those shots (2.9 SH%). You gotta think it’s only a matter of time before some of those start going in. Another positive? Perfetti is tied for 3rd in OHL with 10 assists.
Tyler Tullio of Oshawa and Tyson Foerster of Barrie have had real nice starts to the season. Both are up to 5 goals and 9 points so far. Tullio, plays a power forward style game despite his light frame. He has a big shot & goes hard to the net. Foerster meanwhile, has very good hockey sense & a sneaky good shot and release. He also has good size and is a right shot center.
The two Windsor kids who both have 1st round potential (Will Cuylle & Jean-Luc Foudy) continue to disappoint offensively.
As far 16 year olds go, Francesco Pinelli continues to light the lamp and impress just about anyone who watches him. He’s now up to 6 goals in 6 games for Kitchener. The super rookie has taken full advantage playing with a couple of OHL veterans on the Top line for the Rangers. Mason McTavish continues to impress with his greaat hockey sense & playmaking ability. He is tied with Pinelli for most points for 16 yr olds in OHL with 7 points in 6 games.
New to the list is Chase Stillman, who scored a hat trick for Sudbury on Friday. The son of former NHL’er and current Sudbury Wolves coach Corey Stillman, is now up for 4 goals & 5 points on the season.

Alexis Lafreniere is officially on a tear now. After starting the season slow (2 assists in 2 games), the consensus #1 overall pick in this upcoming draft has ripped off 6 goals & 17 points in his last 6 games to surpass Byfield for all 2020 Draft eligibles. He also has a ridiculous 48 shots on goal in 8 games total (6 per game average).
While Lafreniere may be pulling away in points, Dawson Mercer continues to lead in goals as he’s up to 7 goals in 7 games now. The late 2001 birthday eligible continues to show flashes of 1st round potential with that terrific shot & release.
Patrick Guay registered 4 goals & 7 points last week for Sherbrooke. He’s only listed as 5’9″, 171 lbs but Guay has great offensive instincts and a terrific wrist shot & deadly accuracy.
Hendrix Lapierre has a disappointing 6 assists in 6 games. Much more is expected of the potential Top 15 pick in this upcoming NHL draft.

Zachary L’Heureux now leads all 16 yr olds with 11 points in 7 games. He has a 4 game goal scoring streak and 28 SOG already. The 3rd overall pick in the 2019 QMJHL is a very heady player with real nice skill. James Malatesta leads all 16 yr olds in the league with 6 goals in 7 games.
Isaac Belliveau is a poised player with good offensive instincts but undoubtedly has benefited greatly from the Lafreniere effect. He now has 7 assists (8 points) in 8 games for Rimouski.
Highly touted and former 1st overall pick Joshua Roy now has 3 goals in 7 games for Saint John.

Connor Zary has now taken over the scoring lead for 2020 WHL Draft eligibles registering 10 points in 7 games. You can see he is an excellent playmaker who has nice hands in tight. He makes good reads & is pretty good defensively as well. What also stands out about him is his shots on goal total. Zary leads the entire WHL with 43 SOG (7 more than next closest). Keeping all that in mind, he is one of the oldest prospects in this year’s draft though so his numbers aren’t nearly as impressive as they look on paper. Nice player with a nice skill-set.
Pavel Novak has shot up the leaderboard after registering 3 goals & 3 assists in 3 games last week. The 1st rd import pick had a slow start in the WHL with only 3 shots in 4 games. But last week, he had 12 shots in 3 games and was rewarded. Novak has very good puck skills, displays good vision and doesn’t shy away physically. Definitely someone to keep an eye on as his confidence improves.
After registering just 1 assist in 4 games, Kaiden Guhle had a nice week with a 4 point effort against Regina on Saturday.

As far as the 2021 draft eligibles go, Ryder Korczak still leads in points with 10 points in the last 5 games. He only 12 shots on goal total but has a point in every game so far for the Warriors. Excellent offensive extincts, great vision and passing ability.
Cole Sillinger son of Mike Sillinger continues to impress. He’s now up to a point a game and has shown some real offensive flair & relentless work ethic for Medicine Hat.
