07/01 – Free agency was pretty quiet as expected with the only real addition being Ty Rattie a former WHL standout.  Rattie, 24, was put on waivers a couple times last year. Not sure if Oilers actually tried to put a claim in for him then but regardless he is Oiler property to start the year at least hopefully he can make the most of it. He did score 57 goals and 121 points in 2011 for Portland which is no joke. The fact he is RH shot RW gives him a chance in this organization.

The rest of the signings were pretty much to fill the AHL roster although Grayson Downing (25) is an intriguing center who has been able to put up points pretty much wherever he goes going back to his BCHL days.

The losses in Free agency were a bit more significant as the Oilers lost growing fan favourite Tyler Pitlick to Dallas, depth defenceman Jordan Oesterle to Chicago and playoff hero for a day David Desharnais to New York Rangers. Pitlick probably hurt the most but he got a 3 year contract from Dallas something Edmonton likely wasn’t comfortable with given his long injury history.

07/05 – A significant day in Oilers history. Captain Connor McDavid signs an 8 year, $100 Million dollar extension. With an annual cap hit of $12.5 Million the Oilers have to be ecstatic he left money on the table. I recently projected he’d sign a 5 year contract with an average hit of $11.5 Million so I’m not surprised since he went 8 years he got $12.5 Million. Classy kid who wants to win first and foremost, you can’t help but admire the fact he didn’t take the Oilers to the cleaners financially – because realistically it would be hard to argue he didn’t deserve it.

07/07 – Oilers sign LW Jussi Jokinen to a 1 yr $1.1 Million contract. Great depth signing as Jokinen can play wing or center, PP or PK and can be a great mentor to fellow countryman Jesse Puljujarvi. Low risk high reward addition.

Still no Draisaitl signing yet but now that McDavid has signed for less than reported, there is a chance he may do the same. Cross your fingers.
